Make and sell hats, shirts and emotes in the NEO Marketplace, and how players buy, own and wear them.

On this page

Avatar items are things players wear or do with their avatar. You list them from the Creator Hub, they appear in the Marketplace for every player, and you earn a share of each sale.

Kinds of avatar items#

KindWhat it isHow players use it
HatSomething worn on the headWear it on the Avatar page or straight after buying
ShirtA top for the avatar's bodyWear it on the Avatar page or straight after buying
EmoteAn animation the avatar performsPut it in one of eight emote slots on the Avatar page

A player can wear up to 10 hats and shirts at a time. Everything worn or put in a slot has to be owned.

List an item#

  1. Open Avatar items in the Creator Hub.
  2. Pick the Kind: Hat, Shirt or Emote.
  3. Enter a Name (1 to 60 characters, and it has to pass the name filter) and, if you like, a Description.
  4. Set the Price (Credits): any whole number from 0 to 1,000,000. A price of 0 makes the item free.
  5. Choose List in the Marketplace.

The item goes on sale at once and appears in your list on the same page, and in the Marketplace for everyone. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see Sell your first avatar item.

How your item looks#

NEO draws each item's picture for you, on the NEO mannequin on a plain stage. You don't upload artwork for avatar items.

  • Hats are drawn on the mannequin's head and shoulders. The hat's shape comes from words in its name: "crown", "top" (a top hat), "cap", "beanie" or "toque", and "halo". Any other name gets a soft hat with a brim.
  • Shirts are drawn on the mannequin's shoulders, with a collar.
  • Emotes show the whole mannequin in a pose that comes from the name: "wave" or "hello", "dance" or "party", "victory", "cheer" or "win", and "bow". Any other name gets arms held out.

Each item's color is picked from a fixed set of materials and stays the same everywhere the item appears, so the picture and an avatar wearing the item match.

Earnings#

The Avatar items page says it plainly: "You earn 40% of each sale, plus the game it sold in earns 10%." The game's 10% goes to the owner of the game the item was bought in. A purchase in the Marketplace isn't made in a game, so only your 40% applies there. Your share starts as pending and becomes available after a hold. See Monetization and NEO Credits and earnings.

You can't buy your own items.

Change the price or stop selling#

The Creator Hub's Avatar items page lists your items but doesn't edit them. Avatar items aren't tied to a game, so they don't appear on a game's Store tab either. Changing a listed avatar item's price, or taking it off sale, isn't available in the Creator Hub yet. The platform API's EconomyService.UpdateItem call can do both (see the economy API reference).

When an item stops selling, players who bought it keep it.

The Marketplace#

The Marketplace is where players browse avatar items. It has:

  • categories: All, Hats, Shirts and Emotes;
  • sorting: Best selling, Newest, Price: low to high and Price: high to low;
  • search, from the top bar's Search the Marketplace box, which matches item names and creator names.

Each item card shows the picture, the name, By and the creator, and the price (or Free). Choosing a card opens the item's page.

Buying#

The item's page shows the kind, the creator, the price, how many have sold, and the description, plus More from the same creator. A signed-in player chooses Buy (or Get for a free item). The Buy item dialog shows Your balance and After this purchase, then Buy for the price.

If the player doesn't have enough Credits, the dialog says how many more they need and offers Credit packs right there. After paying, the dialog lets them buy.

After buying, the dialog says "Added to your inventory." For a hat or shirt, Wear now puts it on at once. Visitors who aren't signed in see Sign in to buy; guests see Create an account to buy.

Inventory#

A player's Inventory lists everything they own, with tabs for All, Hats, Shirts, Emotes, Game passes and Products. Edit avatar opens the Avatar page, where the player wears hats and shirts, fills emote slots 1 to 8, and chooses Save avatar. On an owned hat or shirt's page, Wear and Wearing · take off do the same from there.
